Government Launches New Plan to Accelerate Remediation of Unsafe Buildings

The UK government has unveiled a bold new initiative to address unsafe buildings across England. As part of the Remediation Acceleration Plan, the government aims to speed up the process of fixing unsafe cladding and ensure that rogue freeholders are held accountable. The plan includes significantly tougher penalties for those who refuse to act.

Key Targets and Deadlines

  • By the end of 2029, all 18m+ high-rise buildings with unsafe cladding in a government-funded scheme will have been remediated.
  • 11m+ buildings with unsafe cladding will either be remediated, have a set date for completion, or landlords will face severe penalties.

This plan is part of a wider effort to make homes safer and ensure every resident lives in a secure environment.

Strengthened Enforcement

The government has promised increased investment in enforcement, equipping local authorities, fire and rescue services, and the Building Safety Regulator with the resources needed to tackle hundreds of cases annually.

Developer Commitment

In a show of industry collaboration, 29 developers—responsible for over 95% of buildings being remediated by developers themselves—have committed to doubling the rate of remediation. By summer 2027, work will have started on all of these buildings.

Grenfell Legacy

While 95% of buildings with the same cladding as Grenfell Tower have been remediated, the government acknowledges that only 30% of buildings with identified unsafe cladding in England have been fixed. This plan aims to address the remaining buildings and identify those that have yet to be flagged.

A Call for Action

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner emphasized the urgency of the situation: "More than seven years after the Grenfell tragedy, thousands of people are still living in dangerous conditions due to cladding. The pace of remediation has been far too slow. We are taking decisive action to make homes safe."

With stronger penalties, enhanced enforcement, and a clearer commitment from developers, the government’s Remediation Acceleration Plan is set to tackle the building safety crisis and ensure residents can live without fear of unsafe living conditions.
